Law Enforcement & Fire Department Co-responder Program

The SOUND Mobile Rapid Response Crisis Teams are specially equipped two-person units, traveling in vans, staffed by behavioral health professionals and certified peer counselors. They are designed to de-escalate mental health and substance use crises, provide immediate support, and connect individuals to long-term care.

SOUND’s Co-Responder Program brings trained mental-health clinicians together with police and fire departments in King County to provide support during emergency situations. Our goal is to make sure you or your loved one can receive professional mental-health care when it is needed, whether alongside first responders or in place of them. We currently partner with the Tukwila Police Department, Burien Police Department, and Burien Fire Department.

Who These Services are For

Our Co-Responder team works with people from all backgrounds across the communities we serve. We respond to situations where mental-health needs may be present, including domestic conflicts, child-welfare concerns, or moments when someone needs food, shelter, or medical support. We also work with judges, prosecutors, school counselors, and social workers to help connect people to treatment instead of incarceration. Our focus is on safety, understanding, and providing support that meets your needs.

How We Support You

Co-Responders are trained to assess safety and provide immediate support. Once you are stable, we help connect you to services that may include mental-health care, substance-use treatment, housing, and other resources to help you stay safe and supported. Our team listens, collaborates, and helps you create a plan that works for your life and circumstances.

Goals

Our goal is to provide the right care at the right time. We work to keep you safe, supported, and empowered while helping you access the services you need. This program also gives community members an alternative to traditional police intervention so officers can focus on emergencies while we provide specialized support during mental-health crises.
