About Us

Our past, our present and those that have helped shape the way.

The
Story of
SOUND

In 1963, the Community Mental Health Act signaled a major shift toward compassionate, community‑based support. This new vision inspired former Governor Booth Gardner and local businessman Artie Buerk to establish what would become Sound Behavioral Health in 1966.

For over 60 years, SOUND has continued to honor that legacy. Even through periods of change and uncertainty, our story remains rooted in advocacy, inclusion, and deep respect for the people we serve. Today, our services are just as essential for individuals, families, and communities throughout King County.

Across our region, more people are facing challenges that can feel overwhelming—experiences shaped by trauma, poverty, housing instability, disabilities, substance use, or ongoing health concerns. We recognize the strength it takes to move through these circumstances, and we see each person as more than the hardships they encounter.

Over the years, SOUND has grown into a diverse and committed team of behavioral health professionals who approach care with empathy, cultural humility, and a focus on safety and healing. We work alongside our clients, offering support that honors choice, builds on strengths, and creates meaningful opportunities for recovery and stability.

Our programs lead to countless life‑changing outcomes. Thanks to the dedication of our staff, the courage of our clients, and the generosity of our community partners, we continue moving forward in our mission to provide accessible, essential care to anyone who comes to us in need.

Together, we can foster hope, promote healing, and strengthen the well‑being and quality of life of our entire community.
