IDD Crisis Stabilization

The SOUND Mobile Rapid Response Crisis Teams are specially equipped two-person units, traveling in vans, staffed by behavioral health professionals and certified peer counselors. They are designed to de-escalate mental health and substance use crises, provide immediate support, and connect individuals to long-term care.

Crisis Stabilization is a community-based, evidence-informed program designed to support you or your loved one during times of emotional, behavioral, or life crisis. This service is funded through the Developmental Disabilities Administration and uses state and waiver-based resources to provide compassionate, responsive care focused on safety, stability, and long-term wellbeing.

Who These Services are For

Crisis Stabilization supports adults 18 and older who are enrolled with the Developmental Disabilities Administration and live in King County. If you or your loved one has an intellectual or developmental disability and is experiencing a mental-health, behavioral, environmental, or vocational crisis, this program is here to help. We understand that people with IDD often face barriers to care, including being misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or not receiving the right supports. These gaps can lead to repeated crises, hospital visits, and disruptions in quality of life. Our team exists to help change that by providing responsive, respectful, and appropriate care when it matters most.

Approach to Care

At SOUND, we see you and your family as essential partners in care. We listen closely to your experiences, goals, and concerns, and we work together to create support that fits your unique situation. Our approach is strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed, focusing on what is already working while building new skills and supports. We aim to reduce immediate stress, restore a sense of safety, and help create stability, hope, and positive change.

Our community-based services include thoughtful assessments of current and past needs, collaborative planning, after-hours support, emergency coordination, team meetings, and connections to planned and emergency respite services. We focus on teamwork, empowerment, compassion, and respect, while supporting both individuals and families through every step of the process. Each interaction is guided by kindness, dignity, and care for the whole person.

Goals

Our goal is to help you or your loved one feel understood, supported, and connected to the right services. We work to build a system of care where individuals with IDD can thrive, feel safe, and access meaningful support. This includes strengthening wellness, recognizing personal strengths, improving access to services, addressing gaps in care, and increasing understanding across service systems. Through outreach, training, collaboration, and crisis planning, we help build stronger, more responsive supports while also being there during acute crises when they happen, even with the best prevention efforts in place.
