Fredrick Michel, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Washington state native Fred Michel, MD, joined Sound’s Executive Leadership Team in 2022 as Chief Medical Officer after serving 30 years in leadership roles in Colorado’s community behavioral health system.

Dr. Michel, a psychiatrist, oversees Sound’s medical and psychiatric programs, and provides guidance on the integration of Sound’s clinical, psychiatric and medical care to ensure optimal delivery. As part of managing more than 20 medical professionals including psychiatrists, primary care doctors, ARNPs, physician assistants and other practitioners, Dr. Michel is responsible for developing strategies to drive the growth of our integrated practice.

Sound’s medical team provides diagnostic assessment, treatment recommendations, medication monitoring, clinical review to patients and teams across Sounds robust range of program offerings.

Dr. Michel attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, earning degrees in biology and psychology before attending the University of Washington where he earned his medical degree. He completed residency and fellowship training in Denver, Colorado and holds dual board certifications with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Following residency, Dr. Michel served in the US Air Force as a psychiatrist at the Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio Texas. He then served in Colorado for over the past three decades as Chief Medical Officer at Diversus Health in Colorado Springs; Mental Health Partners in Boulder; and SummitStone Health Partners in Fort Collins.
