The Clinician is responsible for providing assessment, direct clinical intervention, and supportive consultation to child, adolescent, and adult family members presenting with a wide variety of emotional, behavioral and co-occurring disorders. Delivery of therapeutic services in the office, school, and community, to child, adolescent, and adult family members will be emphasized, including ongoing consultation and collaboration with collateral agencies (schools, agencies, caseworkers, etc.). The individual in this position will be required to work with the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS), education (school), inpatient facilities, mental health residential facilities, and other systems of care in developing holistic, strength based, recovery oriented therapeutic plans to maintain children and adolescents with significant mental health problems in the community.

Essential Functions:

Client Care:

  • Provide intake evaluations.
  • Provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy treatment to children and adolescents, adults, and family members.
  • Identify and assess client problems from various clinical orientations and modalities.
  • Ensure the safety and privacy of the client in the office, school, or community.
  • Maintain ethical, competent, and healthy client relationships, communication skills, and boundaries.
  • Develop and implement effective interventions, treatment plans, and session preparation time, individualized to address client’s current and long term needs.
  • Communicate, collaborate, and establish a working relationship with client’s family. Promote family/caregiver involvement.
  • Coordinate case management services in a family focused, strength based manner.
  • Collaborate with client’s identified supports.
  • Maintain an emphasis on diversity as support for client.
  • Develop culturally sensitive treatment plans and collaboration in support of client and client’s family.
  • Collaborate with multiple systems.
  • Attend meetings in school and community as support to client.
  • Consult with schools to identify a low academic disruption session time to meet with client.
  • Collaborate with school staff, community agency staff, and office staff as support to client.
  • Collaborate with applicable community agencies and community partners as they relate to individual clinical cases.
  • Address client grievances and assist in implementing the client grievance procedure on behalf of the client.
  • Follow crisis management procedures in support of client, including appropriate interventions and hospitalizations.
  • Transport clients at multiple sites in community and at schools.

Case Management:

  • Prepare necessary written reports, summaries, and progress notes as dictated by agency policy, to be a part of clinical records.
  • Provide all applicable case management services.
  • Complete all documentation and paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Perform periodic reviews of documentation (paperwork) on a regular basis when required by Program Manager or when need arises (self-audit).
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Maintain SMH productivity expectations and standards.
  • Maintain Psych-Consult training and required Essential Learning Courses.

Internal Agency Collaboration:

  • Maintain ethical and competent peer relationships in the delivery of service.
  • Provide support of SMH staff as needed, building and creating positive, professional relationships within the work environment.
  • Provide support of interns, students, and volunteers as necessary.
  • Notify office staff, Program Manager, and Coordinator of any schedule changes.
  • Maintain internal consistency between SMH sites and programs.

Inter-Agency Collaboration and Referral Sources:

  • Maintain a positive, ethical, and professional working relationship with community, government agencies, and other professionals.
  • Maintain inter-agency collaboration.
  • Provide consultation/education services to other organizations as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain positive, professional working relationships with potential referral sources.

Professional and Ethical Conduct:

  • Meet agency productivity standards. Productivity expectations will be determined at time of employment and at yearly reviews.
  • Participate in staff meetings and assigned committees, as requested.
  • Participate in individual supervision and group supervision as scheduled.

  • Maintain conduct according to relevant WAC codes and ethical standards.

  • Comply with, have knowledge of, and be familiar with all SMH safety regulations and protocol, establishing boundaries and rules when necessary.

  • Employee may be requested to work toward CDP certification.

  • Skill and experience in working with
    • a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems in children;
    • the presenting problems of the entire family unit;
    • individual adult problems and marital difficulties;
    • communicating effectively with collateral agencies having contact with the child and/or the family; and
    • early intervention and prevention as well as time effective treatment.
  • Ability to work well independently is necessary.
  • A thorough knowledge of child and adolescent development (cognitive, emotional, and physical) is required.
  • A willingness to work some early evening hours is necessary. Knowledge of community mental health systems, the public schools, the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) and resources within Seattle is highly desirable.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a therapeutic counseling field, or special education, with a strong emphasis in working with adolescents, children, families and community agencies is required.
  • A minimum of two years clinical experience as a psychotherapist or case manager with children and adolescents and demonstrated skills in clinical assessment and treatment of multi-problem families is preferred.
  • Direct clinical experience with minority and low-income families is required. Because of the nature of the target population, experience with ethnic/cultural diversity is preferred.
  • Substance Use Disorder (SUD) credentialing will be required for this job. The Clinician must either be enrolled in a SUD program, or be willing to work toward a CDP or CDPT credential upon hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a WA State Agency Affiliated Counselor credential within the first 60 days of hire.
  • Must have WA state driver’s license and insurable driving record as well as reliable transportation.
