Ryan Lindsey to Appear at NAACP Health Fair, July 10
Sound Team Member Ryan Lindsey will be one of the featured speakers at the Take Control of Your Health virtual health fair on July 10, from 9:30 am – 12 Noon. The free seminar is sponsored by the Seattle NAACP. Lindsey, Clinical supervisor for Adult Services, will talk about substance addiction and recovery as part of a panel and during a breakout session.
Looking at BIPOC health concerns through a racial lens
Since early in 2020, the COVID Pandemic coupled with societal and social unrest has affected many people in a variety of ways. But Communities of Color have been hit particularly hard. Moreover, in addition to concern about physical health, rates of depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide have risen significantly. In addition, racism, protests, lack of access to healthcare, distrust of healthcare systems, and fear of law enforcement have had a negative impact on individuals both physically and mentally. This virtual health fair addresses mental and physical health through a racial and equity lens and offers valuable resource information on how to receive treatment, access healthcare systems, and support friends and family members who may be experiencing a health crisis.
Guest Speakers
Confirmed speakers include Professor Estilla Lightfoot from Tulane University, who will speak about racism and trauma; Substance Abuse Counselor Ryan Lindsey, clinical supervisor for Adult Services at Sound, who will talk about substance abuse recovery and treatment; former NBA player and author James Donaldson, who will share his personal story of triumph over a mental health crisis; Hannah Wilson, farm manager for Black Farmers Collective, who will talk about healthy food options and community urban farming and Dr. Nancy Fisher, Chief Medical Officer from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who discusses how to understand and navigate healthcare services.
The event will also feature breakout sessions and a question-and-answer period. In addition, health resource information about Medicaid and Medicare and other programs and services will be available to attendees.
